Electricity systems were designed around large, controllable power stations; wind and solar are variable, and their output does not automatically coincide with peaks in demand. But variability is not the same as unreliability, and modern grids have more tools than is commonly acknowledged.\n\n(3) ..........\n\nThere is also a frequent confusion between “energy” and “electricity”. Heating, transport and much of industry still run largely on fossil fuels, so decarbonising the power sector is only a first step. Nevertheless, it is the step that makes many others possible, because electrification can substitute for combustion in cars, boilers and certain industrial processes.\n\n(4) ..........\n\nThe importance of renewables, therefore, is not restricted to carbon accounting. It is about resilience. A diverse, domestic portfolio of generation reduces exposure to supply shocks, whether from conflict, cartel behaviour, or unexpected disruptions in global shipping. And in many regions, renewables are uniquely suited to decentralisation.\n\n(5) ..........\n\nEven so, the transition is as much political as it is technological. Permitting can take longer than construction; local opposition can stall projects; and investment is sensitive to policy whiplash. If governments want a rapid shift, they must provide stable rules, transparent incentives, and a credible plan for workers and communities tied to legacy industries.\n\n(6) ..........\n\nUltimately, the case for renewable energy is not a claim that it will solve every problem. It is that it addresses several of the most urgent ones simultaneously: climate risk, air quality, and the strategic vulnerability that comes from burning fuels that have to be dug up, shipped, and bought from elsewhere.
