Cambridge English B1 Exam
For each question, choose the correct answer by matching the people below with the following texts.
Choosing a Community Class
The people below all want to join a community class. Below are descriptions of eight classes. Decide which class would be the most suitable for each person. For questions 1-5, choose the correct answer.
Grace
Grace is training for a charity 10 km run but keeps getting small injuries. She wants advice from a professional about stretching and strength, and she would like a plan she can follow at home. She is free on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. She prefers a calm class, not a competitive team sport.
Maya
Maya has just started a job in an office and wants to feel more confident speaking in meetings. She can only attend on weekday evenings. She would like lots of speaking practice in a small group, not grammar homework. She also wants the class to be near public transport because she doesn’t drive.
Samir
Samir enjoys fixing things and wants to learn basic home repairs before he spends money on a handyman. He needs a course that includes safe use of tools and simple electrical jobs like changing a socket. He can attend on two weekday evenings. He would like a practical workshop, not an online course.
Leila
Leila loves taking photos on her phone, but her pictures are often dark indoors. She wants a short course that teaches lighting and basic editing, and she prefers learning by doing, not long lectures. She is free on Sunday afternoons and would like to borrow equipment rather than buy it.
Owen
Owen is moving into his first flat next month and wants to learn simple cooking he can repeat after work. He is vegetarian and wants to learn meals with cheap ingredients. He can only do Saturday mornings. He would like to take food home, because he doesn’t have much time to eat there.
Texts
Grammar for Business Emails
This course is designed for office workers who want to write correct emails and reports. Each lesson focuses on grammar rules, punctuation and formal vocabulary. You will complete written exercises in class and you will have homework every week. The teacher gives detailed corrections, and there is a short test at the end of the course. Classes run on Monday evenings from 6.30 to 8.30 for eight weeks. The school is in a quiet area outside the city centre, and parking is available. Speaking practice is limited, because the main aim is accurate writing.
Budget Veggie Batch Cooking
Learn to cook simple vegetarian meals that are cheap, filling and easy to repeat at home. In this practical class you work in pairs and prepare three dishes using basic ingredients you can find in any supermarket. The teacher also shows you how to store food safely and how to plan meals for a busy week. The course runs on Saturday mornings from 9.30 to 12.00 and lasts for five weeks. At the end of each lesson, you pack your food into containers to take home for lunch or dinner. Please bring an apron; everything else is provided.
Phone Photography: Light and Edit
If your photos look great outside but disappointing indoors, this hands-on workshop is for you. You will learn how to use natural and artificial light, how to avoid shadows on faces, and how to make colours look more real. After that, the tutor shows simple editing steps using free apps, including cropping and improving brightness. The course is short: three Sunday afternoons from 2.00 to 4.30. You do not need to buy anything, because we lend small lights and tripods during the class. There are no long talks; you practise in the studio and get quick advice on your own pictures.
Speak Up After Work
This evening course is for adults who want to speak more clearly and confidently in everyday work situations. Classes are held in groups of eight, so everyone gets plenty of time to talk. Each week you practise short presentations, giving opinions, and joining discussions, with friendly feedback from the teacher. There is very little written homework, because the focus is on speaking and listening. The centre is two minutes’ walk from Central Station and several bus stops. Lessons run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.30 to 8.00 p.m. You can join for four weeks or for a longer period if you prefer.
Fix-It Basics: Home Repairs
This practical workshop is for people who want to solve common problems at home without calling a professional every time. You will learn how to use basic tools safely, repair a loose door handle, fill small holes in a wall, and stop a dripping tap. One session is also about simple electrical safety, including changing a plug and replacing a damaged socket cover, with clear rules about what you should never do at home. Classes take place in our training room, not online, and you work with real materials. The course runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m. for four weeks.
Runner’s Strength and Stretch Plan
Many runners train hard but forget the exercises that protect the body. In this calm, coach-led class you learn warm-ups, stretching, and simple strength work for legs, hips and back. The coach checks your movement and helps you avoid common injuries. You also receive a weekly home plan with short videos, so you can practise between lessons. Sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.45 to 8.00, and the group is limited to ten people. This is not a race team and there are no competitions. Please wear comfortable sports clothes; mats and bands are provided.
Five-Minute Meals for Families
Do you need to cook quickly for children and adults with different tastes? In this friendly class you learn fast meals with meat, fish and vegetables, plus ideas for lunchboxes. The teacher demonstrates each recipe at the front while students watch and take notes. There is a short tasting at the end, but you do not take full meals home. The course runs on Sunday mornings from 10.00 to 12.00 for six weeks. Ingredients are included in the price. This class is popular with parents, so it can be noisy and busy, especially in the first weeks.
Studio Photography with a DSLR
This course introduces DSLR cameras and studio equipment for people who want professional-looking portraits. You will learn camera settings, lenses, and how to use large flash lights. Students are expected to bring their own DSLR camera, because we do not have enough to lend. The course runs for eight weeks on Wednesday evenings from 7.00 to 9.30. The first half of each lesson is a lecture with notes, and the second half is practice time. Basic computer editing is included, but the main focus is on using studio flash correctly. This course is not suitable for phone photography.

What to do
This task is a long one, so don’t worry, it cannot be done quickly!
Your task is to match eight texts with five people. There are three texts which you will not need.
It’s important to find out what the different people want before you look at the eight texts.
Don’t choose an answer just because it contains the same words as the question. Read the texts carefully to check the meaning is correct.
This part of the test cannot be done quickly because you need to read the details in each text carefully, and you may have to go back to a text and re-read it several times.
When you are sure you have found an answer, you may want to cross out that particular text as you will not need to read it again.
Strategy
- Read the five descriptions of people and underline the key words.
- Now read one description and try to find the matching text. The correct text must have all the points that the person requires. For example, if a person wants a romantic book that is short, you must find a text which matches the two requirements: romantic and short.
- Usually, the correct answer will not contain exactly the same words as the person’s description. You may have to recognize different ways of saying the same thing, for example, ‘love story’ instead of ‘romantic’, and ‘a book | can read quickly’ instead of ‘a short book’.
- If you think that there are two texts that seem to match the same person, read the description and the two texts again carefully. Only ONE text will match ALL of a person’s requirements.
- Check that the option you have chosen ts correct by trying to find out why the other options are incorrect.
