Greener Packaging

As consumers become more aware of environmental issues, companies are under pressure to reduce the amount of waste they produce. One area that has received particular attention is packaging. In the past, manufacturers often relied (0) HEAVILY on plastic because it was cheap, light and easy to shape. However, attitudes have begun to change, and many businesses are now looking (1) .......... alternatives that are less harmful to the planet. One major challenge is to come (2) .......... materials that are strong enough to protect products while also being recyclable or biodegradable. Scientists and designers have worked together to develop packaging made from paper, plant fibres and even seaweed. Some of these solutions have already been put (3) .......... use in supermarkets and online stores. At the same time, customers are being encouraged to cut (4) .......... on unnecessary wrapping and to reuse containers whenever possible. Although eco-friendly packaging can sometimes cost more to produce, many experts point (5) .......... that it may save money in the long run by reducing waste and improving a company's image. As a result, more firms are willing to invest (6) .......... research in this field. If this trend carries (7) .........., environmentally responsible packaging is likely to become the norm rather than the exception. This would be a positive step (8) .......... a more sustainable future.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
