Speaking - Final Discussion Tips

Essential strategies and common pitfalls to help you ace your Cambridge English exam.

What to do

The examiner asks questions to you and to the other candidate, encouraging you to discuss further. The questions will focus on your likes/dislikes, habits and opinions.

When it’s your turn to speak you should try to speak for about fifteen to twenty seconds. You need to answer and then give reasons or examples. Use linking words like: but, because, although, plus, so that you extend the length of your sentences with reasons why.

If you don’t know anything about a topic in the Speaking paper, do not talk about anything else. You need to show your language skills, not your knowledge about a specific subject.

Remember that there are no right answers to the questions and you will not be judged on your opinions only on the language.

You will typically talk about the topics from part 3 in more detail. You are tested on your ability to give opinions, give reasons for your opinions, and your ability to politely discuss things with your partner. B1 will be more about generic questions.
