Cambridge Exam Practice
Anyone preparing seriously for the Cambridge C1 exam soon discovers that success depends on far more than a wide vocabulary. While grammar remains important, candidates are also expected to deal (0) WITH pressure, manage their time wisely and avoid being thrown by unfamiliar wording. One of the most effective ways to improve is to practise under realistic conditions, since this helps students become (1) .......... to the pace of the paper. It also allows them to identify the question types that they consistently struggle (2) .......... and to build strategies for dealing with them. However, practice alone is not always enough. Some learners repeat exercise after exercise without reflecting on their mistakes, and as a (3) .......... they make the same errors again in the next task. A better approach is to keep a record of incorrect answers and note the reason each option was wrong. Over time, this can lead (4) .......... a sharper awareness of collocation, register and fixed expressions. It is equally important not to focus exclusively on weaknesses. Revising areas of strength can build confidence and prevent knowledge from slipping (5) ........... In the end, steady preparation is more useful than last-minute panic. Students who work consistently tend to (6) .......... up performing better than those who rely on luck, and they are less likely to be put (7) .......... by difficult questions. What to do
In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.
Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.
Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.
If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.
Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.
Strategy
- Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
- Check the words before and after the gap.
- Choose the best option.
- When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
