Exam Preparation
For many advanced learners, preparing for a high-level English exam is not simply a matter of memorising rules. Success often depends on the ability to recognise vocabulary in context and to distinguish between options that may appear similar at first (0) SIGHT. Candidates who do well are usually those who have built up a wide range of collocations and fixed expressions over time, rather than those who rely (1) .......... on instinct. One common mistake is to focus so heavily (2) .......... grammar that vocabulary development is neglected. Yet in many tasks, the correct answer depends less on structure than on whether a word naturally (3) .......... with the surrounding text. Another useful strategy is to read beyond the gap before choosing an answer, as the sentence may (4) .......... on an idea introduced later. Teachers also advise students not to be put (5) .......... by unfamiliar topics, since the language tested is often more important than the subject itself. Regular practice can also help learners become aware (6) .......... recurring patterns, making them quicker and more accurate under pressure. What to do
In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.
Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.
Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.
If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.
Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.
Strategy
- Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
- Check the words before and after the gap.
- Choose the best option.
- When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
