Remote Collaboration

The rapid spread of remote collaboration tools has transformed the way people work, especially in international teams. What was once seen as a temporary solution has now become a permanent (0) FEATURE of modern working life. Video conferencing platforms, shared documents and instant messaging apps have all helped colleagues stay in (1) .........., even when separated by thousands of miles. For many companies, these tools have brought about greater flexibility, allowing staff to work from home without falling (2) .......... of project deadlines. At the same time, managers have had to come to (3) .......... with the fact that productivity can no longer be measured simply by physical presence in an office. However, the rise of such tools has not been entirely straightforward. Some employees complain that the constant flow of messages leaves them with little chance to switch (4) .........., while others argue that online meetings often drag (5) .......... for longer than necessary. There is also concern that informal workplace interaction, once taken for (6) .........., may gradually disappear. Even so, few experts doubt that remote collaboration tools are here to stay. As the technology develops further, businesses will need to strike a careful (7) .......... between efficiency and employee wellbeing. What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
